Gazprom and ChelPipe Sign a Roadmap for Launching New Generation Pipe Production

Today, at the 6th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Gazprom, and Andrey Komarov, a shareholder and member of the Board of Directors of ChelPipe, signed a roadmap for launching the production of new generation pipes.

Under the roadmap, ChelPipe will develop for Gazprom a laser welding technology to manufacture longitudinally welded, large diameter pipes and fittings made from both conventional and high strength steel grades (X80-X120). This is the world's first batch large diameter pipe manufacturing project based on such technology.

Presently pipes over 530 mm in diameter are only manufactured with arc welding. The laser welding process is expected to improve structural strength and bearing capacity, weld quality and corrosion resistance. Laser-welded pipes have longer service life and enhance pipeline reliability. This is very important for pipelines located in demanding climatic regions like the Arctic shelf or seismic areas.

According to the roadmap, the first batch of new generation pipes up to 1,420 mm in diameter made from steel grades up to X80 will be delivered to Gazprom in 2020–2021. The company's estimated annual demand for such pipes is up to 150,000 tons. In 2022–2024, a pilot production of laser-welded high strength (X100 and X120 steel grade) pipes and fittings, which can operate under extremely high pressure, will be launched.

"Gazprom maintains the world's largest gas pipeline network and builds new, advanced pipelines. The new generation pipes will redefine pipeline technology. "I'm confident that the project will be successfully completed through the joint efforts of Gazprom and ChelPipe specialists," noted Alexey Miller.

"The unique laser welding technology is highly efficient and, more importantly, environmentally friendly. It complies with the White Metallurgy concept. The optical fiber laser has been developed in Russia. The laser will be used at ChelPipe's Vysota 239 plant to manufacture large diameter pipes. This fact supports the innovative capacity of the domestic manufacturing industry," said Andrey Komarov.
