On August 16 Nizhniy Novgorod Regional Governor Valery Shantsev made a working visit to Vyksa and stopped at the Integrated Casting and Rolling Facility (an OMK-Steel Subsidiary, Vyksa, Member of the United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK, Moscow) Group). The Region’s Chief Executive inspected the process for making flat rolled goods out of the innovative 05ХГБ steel which is used at the Vyksa Steel Works (AO VSW, Nizhniy Novgorod Region, an OMK Subsidiary) as feedstock in the manufacture of oil and gas pipes. The Governor was briefed on the new steel’s and the resulting pipes’ special performance properties. The parameter of service life to first rupture, which is an important metric that every customer considers carefully, is 1.5-2 times better for the new steel than the strength of other steel grades.
“Although at the present time, the operational testing of pilot pipelines made of the advanced steel is ongoing, it has confirmed the excellent service properties of pipes and connectors manufactured from 05ХГБ. These outcomes have enabled a number of domestic oil and gas producers to approve the use of this new product. Some companies have already proceeded to the procurement of industrial quantities of pipe made of the new steel”, reported AO OMK-Steel Vyksa Subsidiary Director Oleg Fedotov.
BACKGROUND
The innovative 05ХГБ pipe steel grade is a joint development by the VSW Engineering and Technology Center and the I. P. Bardin Central Research Institute of Iron and Steel Federal Property Management Corporation. The steel has high corrosion-resistance properties and meets the requirements for high carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide applications. Pipes made by VSW of 05ХГБ steel are designed to be used in all of Russia's oil and gas provinces and have no limitation as to operating temperature or corrosive components of the associated gas.
The manufacturing facility as well as the company have received a number of prestigious industry awards for the development and manufacture of 05ХГБ steel pipes. The new steel grade was named the Invention of the Year in 2015 and awarded the I. P. Kulibin prize. OMK was awarded the Metal Expo 2015 Gold Medal for the development and implementation effort related to 05ХГБ steel coiled rolled goods and and oilfield piping.
